In April by Gerald Yelle

She finds the missing crocus by the river
near the monument
in the grass by the arbor
in the shade by the water’s edge.
On a morning in May
she finds cinquefoil and violets
by the message board by Saint Anne de
Beaupre near the intersection
of Suffolk and Appleton.
In June lilacs hover by orchids
by the Soldier’s Home
by the Willimansett Bridge.
All summer roses by the Liberty Quoit Club
deal with blights of
mealy-bug and infestation of aphid.
In August she
clears the way for caps of
Queen Anne’s Lace and verbena
saving phlox for late September arbors
and gardens where
vines climb trees and trellises.
She puts mounds of sand
in bottle glass in tufts of lemongrass.
She takes you by an
empty hand and steeps you in
silence by Canal Street where no one talks
in autumn and winter
and no one needs to understand.
