EVER SO GENTLY  by Margaret Watson

When lovers entwine, what rests between arms?

Is it yards of blood-soaked gauze?

We carry our crosses bearing the weight.

If loving arms should offer shelter,

do they recoil as we uncover our wounds?

Or, would they cradle our broken parts?

Fear of rejection pushes doubts forward

as the ego secures our palms to the cross.

Is it worth the risk?

Sometimes it is easier to remain in pain.

And then we wonder why no one offers us an umbrella when it rains.

So powerful, Maggie! What we expose, and what we keep to ourselves is a delicate balance.

so many people enter relationships with gauze and dressing still showing. A lot of people never take the time to heal, or allow others to heal. So we all pretend we are okay, until it gets real.

This profound poem asks so many powerful questions. Love is beautiful but also cruel. Other people don’t always understand the pain involved or how we suffer inside. Some hurts never go away.
