The systhem… by Suzanne S. Austin Hill

Wants minorities, soon the majority, to exist on the fringe of society as the most tenuous of threads.  From this, the outliers will be cut and the information highway gridlocked.  They seek to blackout our pages of history.

My mother a child of the dimly lit, segregated South sat at a hand-me-down dining room table on which there were five, no rhyme or reason plates each identifying a family member. When local trees bore one too many strange fruit, she left home for good.  Her plate was broken in celebration.  She migrated to the de facto segregated North that shone like a stunning crystal chandelier.  Eventually she sat at a new, mahogany dining room table on which lay eight complete place settings of ecru, gold-encrusted fine Bone China, pieces purchased one at a time. With purpose, patience, and perseverance, she plated four generations.

Ban the books!  Redact the records!  Drumbeats will carry messages like those that rocked the cradle of civilization. Through Griots tales manifold will travel, reverberate in their syncopation. Ada, Amanda, Gwendolyn, Natasha, Rita, Tracy, and I will verse histories spirited from mind, body, and heart.  And if all else fails, we’ll write more!
