“Dandelions Weep” by Joni Caggiano

Veins of leaves pulsate with wrath, while willow oaks bleed through their bark. Even the sun dares not share her vibrant rays without sunscreen as she clasps a bright red umbrella. Flutes play sad songs while morning steam settles into cracks in sable earth. Extracted hearts fearlessly hang from trees singing songs for the humans’ supplication for Mother Earth. Milkweed sends out carrier pigeons to spread the news to shrinking Monarchs. “Food is plentiful here. Lay your precious white eggs upon my leaves. Seek a bright red carpet laid out as your runway, our friends. Spread your somnolent orange and black body amongst the meal God grew for you as seeds grow with His blessings!”

Dogs and animals eat granules of poison lingering to kill dandelions. Her jagged leaves are the lion’s teeth, and she bites for survival. She weeps her downy tufts, and tears of milk drain from her toxic stems. Golden dreams fly in formation tethered to a silken filament made by smiling water lilies on a talking lake in Myanmar. Blood-shot moon eyes bellow at the humbling skies, “Baby whale and a dolphin getting interlocked in gillnets close to shore.”

Her thin body shivers, her pores percolate as she hugs her sister tree. Hearing Torricelli’s trumpet, she witnesses a topaz-colored man whose eyes ablaze begins to speak. It is as if multitudes speak as his forewarning cuts through the inflamed colors of the sky. “Treat the earth that My Father gave you with humanity and gifts of kind-heartedness, and care as you would for a sickly child! The next time I visit will be the end.”

This is why I love Joni’s writing so much. Perfection incarnate. She’s a master of imagery and metaphor, and her love for nature is strident and immutable. Stunning writing, indeed. You’ve still got it, Joni. ☺️
