Dwight Roth is a talented blogger, poet, author and artist. I discovered the post below on his blog and I asked if I could reproduce it here. Dwight provides a photographic step-by-step account of how he created a beautiful picture in pen and ink watercolours.

A local realtor contacted me and asked if I would paint a picture of the above home that she just sold to friends from our neighborhood. Several years ago, I had painted a mural of the Hobbiton Shire on their garage wall. They were sad to leave it behind when they moved to the new house. The realtor thought it would be nice if I could paint a picture for them, because of this connection.
She wanted it a little larger than I have been doing. (18×24) with a frame! She left me choose how I wanted to do it. Since my acrylics are at the restore, I told her I would do it in pen and ink watercolors. It took a few hours to get the sketch right, and then a few more to get it painted. Finally, I was able to get a board at the Restore to cut out a frame for it. Yesterday I finally finished it for her. Below are some photos of the progress.

My review of Grandpa Has Holes in His Head: Helping children understand Alzheimer’s

Dwight has also written and illustrated children’s books. Today, I am sharing my review of Grandpa Has Holes in His Head: Helping children understand Alzheimer’s. This book was co-illustrated by Molly Roth.

This is a story book that introduces children to dementia and Alzheimer’s. While visiting Grandpa and Grandma, Sam and Kate find their grandfather is getting forgetful and repeating himself over and over again. Their parents explain what is happening and the importance of staying in touch with him through this difficult time in his life.
My review
This is a delightful book for children about a grandfather who is suffering from Alzheimer’s. Kate, the young narrator, and her brother, Sam, love to visit their grandparents who live in a lovely house with a wrap-around porch. The children enjoy sitting in the big red metal glider on the porch and listening to their Grandpa Sharp tell stories about his farming days when people used horses not tractors. Gradually, the fact that Grandpa often doesn’t remember things including the children’s names and where they live is introduced. Grandpa is good humoured about his poor memory and says he has holes in his head where his memories are running out. He says his own grandmother also had hoes in her head. The children don’t mind reminding Grandpa of their names and other information. They have a lot of fun with Grandpa playing on the swing and with the haybales. Grandma makes the children a delicious homemade raspberry pie.
On their way home after the visit, their mother tells them that Grandpa has a form of dementia called Alzheimer’s which causes people to forget things. Mom says Grandma may not be able to look after Grandpa when he gets very forgetful and he may have to move to a special place to be looked after. Mom promises they children that they will all go and visit Grandpa if that happens.
This book is a wonderful way of teaching young children about Alzheimer’s in elderly people. The topic is handled with kindness and understanding and these concepts are reinforced throughout the book.
The book is illustrated with delightful handmade drawings by the author assisted by his own young granddaughter.

South African author, photographer, and artist, Robbie Cheadle, has written and illustrated seventeen children’s books, illustrated a further three children’s books, written and illustrated four poetry books and written and illustrated one celebration of cake and fondant art book with recipes.
