“Three Wishes” by Nolcha Fox

A homeless woman was picking through garbage on a freezing, blizzardy Christmas Eve. Her bent back screamed, and the wind blew through her entire body.

A lost Santa stumbled over the woman. “So sorry! Did I hurt you?”

The woman cried in surprise and pain.

“There, there,” he said, patting her head. “Maybe I have a Christmas present for you.” He pulled out a long list from his beard. “What’s your name?”

The woman wiped snot from her nose. “Donna.”

“Hmmm, no Donna on my list,” he said, and sighed. “Tell you what. I’ll grant you three wishes as a Christmas present.”

Donna nodded. “I’m so tired of living this way, Santa! I’d love to be warm and dry for once. And can you do something about my back? Oh, and I want a really bad attitude to keep people from hurting me.”

Santa twitched his nose three times and disappeared.

Donna turned into a camel in the Sahara Desert. It wasn’t what she expected, but her back didn’t hurt.

There are always ‘glitches’ or misinterpretations when dealing with the three-wishes storytelling theme. Even this one comes with an unexpected ending. Quite enjoyable 🙂

This piece amused me a great deal. I often think it would be lovely to be a flying bird. Their flying seems so free.
