About Leonardo da Vinci
Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519) was a Renaissance polymath, excelling as a painter, scientist, and inventor.
Leonardo employed secret mirror writing. He was left-handed and often wrote in reverse from right to left, a technique called ‘mirror writing’. This allowed him to avoid smudging wet ink and also to keep his notes private and his inventions secret.
He never attended school as a child. Leonardo was largely self-taught aside formal formal apprenticeship in Florence under the master artist, Andrea del Verrocchio.
Leonardo often abandoned art commissions to pursue his scientific studies. He spent seventeen years as a court artist in Milan but only completed six paintings during that time including The Last Supper.
He was a strict vegetarian and a passionate animal lover who despised cruelty. He frequently purchased caged birds at markets in order to set them free.
In order to deeply understand the human body, he secretly dissected over thirty bodies in hospital basements. Leonardo was the first person to deduce that the heart is a pump that circulates blood.
Some of Leonardo da Vinci artworks at the Louvre Museum in Paris
These are all my own photographs which I take while touring. I visited the Louvre Museum over the Easter weekend so it was incredible busy. As a result, some of the pictures are off centre.
