PEOPLE MESS WITH THINGS

These days, with people messing with things prompted by pranks or dares, it may not be safe to assume that if your GPS automobile navigation system told you to cross a certain bridge to reach your destination, that bridge was, in fact, safe to cross. Unless it is also safe to assume that such mischievous actions are tracked and forwarded to the GPS so that drivers are alerted to the danger, it may not be safe at all to cross that bridge. At the grocery store, certain food items you have enjoyed using before may now be subject to recall. Or worse, the product is contaminated, but the recall warning system hasn’t kicked into gear yet. In our nation, we elect people to represent our interests. But like allergies, we don’t really know until we’ve allowed these people access to our system how good or bad they are for the outcome.

PENULTIMATE

Yesterday I put Penultimate to bed and read it some stories until its eyes grew weary and it fell asleep. Now I find myself facing the last day of the month, and fears rise out of cracks in the woodwork that there are far more issues to resolve than time remaining to resolve them. I need to be sure that all the bills are paid, and I lack the resources to delegate that task to a financial expert. My creditors really don’t want to put me in debtor’s prison. They’d rather finagle some reason to raise the level of my indebtedness, like adding surcharges, fees, or higher interest rates. And they make it rather easy for people to agree to those terms and pay them more money.

How I envy that
