About Peter Paul Rubens

Sir Peter Paul Rubens (28 Jane 1577 to 30 May 1640) was a Flemish artist, scholar and diplomat who ran a huge and prolific art workshop in Antwerp. He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition which emphasised movement, colour, and sensuality. Rubens approximately 1,402 paintings frequently included religious and mythological subjects and hunt scenes. He also painted portraits of friends and some self portraits. He is famous for his ‘Rubenesque’ portrayal of figures with voluptuous, firm and pliant forms.

Rubens frequently made use of wooden panels as a support medium but used canvas as well, especially when the work had to be sent a long distance. He sometimes painted on slate for altarpieces in order to reduce reflections.

He was knighted by both Philip IV of Spain and Charles I of England due to his immense artistic fame and diplomatic success in securing peace between England and Spain.

These are my photographs of some of Peter Paul Rubens works that are on display at the Museum of Fine Arts – Old Masters in Brussels. These paintings are massive and the lighting in museums is not idea for photography but they give you a good idea of the beauty and rich colours of these artworks.

I am familiar with some of his religious pieces since my childhood, as they were in a very old family Bible. Now I know some of the history of the artist.
        Thanks again, Robbie.

And who among us can forget that if it wasn’t for Ruben’s appreciation of the female body in all its voluptuous curves- those of us with a Rubenesque figure- may not be counted among the desirable…..

Thank you for sharing this information about Rubens, Robbie. It reminded me of 3 years ago, the first days of summer… and I was looking for the paintings of the Flemish and all Baroque artists on the internet and in older albums, for my son who was learning for his faculty admission exam back then. I remember I used to tell him that he can more easily recognize his style by the «Rubensian» cheeks and shapes, a bit rounded and rosy, the special features characteristics of this style. 😊 I think the word is Rubenesque in English.

You did a great job, Robbie of the post and the photographs. you’re right re how difficult it can be to get a decent pic of them. Personally I Never like to stand too close to do that in case they fall down or something.

Haha, that’s a thought I’ve never had before. These are very big so you can’t get too close and they are covered with glass which causes reflections.

Whenever I see very large-scale paintings in a museum, I wonder where they would have originally been displayed.

In Europe, most of the wealth was in churches and government / royalty buildings. That’s where these paintings would have been.

We went to this gallery in Brussels many years ago, Robbie, so I must have seen some of these in the flesh, as it were. Gorgeous paintings by Rubens, even though I’m not keen on depictions of martyrdom. One of the truly greats. Many thanks for sharing.

I fight with that all the time. I crop the frames out of the photo and then straighten them in the crop tool. When the frames are gone, the glares are less noticeable,

That’s a good idea. I don’t do much cropping in my photographs. I prefer to tell tourists to get out of my way and give me a chance – haha! That’s why TC always hangs back.

I took a class called Rembrandt and Rubens which covered the life and work of both artists. I can’t remember much except coming away with the feeling that I’d rather have known Rembrandt. The Hermitage houses many large scale Ruben’s paintings – mostly religious scenes but quite stunning.

Hi Jan, I don’t know that much about either artist as people, but I do like both their work. I saw some of Rembrandt’s work at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. I prefer the work of Rubens because the people are so rosy and voluptuous. They look attractive and the works are light.
