About Peter Paul Rubens
Sir Peter Paul Rubens (28 Jane 1577 to 30 May 1640) was a Flemish artist, scholar and diplomat who ran a huge and prolific art workshop in Antwerp. He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition which emphasised movement, colour, and sensuality. Rubens approximately 1,402 paintings frequently included religious and mythological subjects and hunt scenes. He also painted portraits of friends and some self portraits. He is famous for his ‘Rubenesque’ portrayal of figures with voluptuous, firm and pliant forms.
Rubens frequently made use of wooden panels as a support medium but used canvas as well, especially when the work had to be sent a long distance. He sometimes painted on slate for altarpieces in order to reduce reflections.
He was knighted by both Philip IV of Spain and Charles I of England due to his immense artistic fame and diplomatic success in securing peace between England and Spain.

These are my photographs of some of Peter Paul Rubens works that are on display at the Museum of Fine Arts – Old Masters in Brussels. These paintings are massive and the lighting in museums is not idea for photography but they give you a good idea of the beauty and rich colours of these artworks.
