Hi everyone, it’s Robbie Cheadle here with you today with the May post in my Photography section on LatinosUSA – English Edition. This month I am featuring Dogs: Wild and Domestic.
Next week’s photography category is People. This month I’m featuring pictures of people playing sport.
I would love all the photographers out there to contribute. If you have a photograph of people playing sport to share in the People category, please email me at cheadlerobbie@gmail.com and use the title Photography – People. Please also include a short write up about your photograph.
African Painted Dogs by Robbie Cheadle
African Painted Dogs are highly endangered and thus very difficult to see in the wild. During a trip to Madikwe Game Reserve in South Africa in January 2024, we had the amazing good luck to see a nine-dog pack of African Painted Dogs. We saw them twice. The first time was in the late afternoon when the pack was hunting. We saw them again the following morning after they’d made their kill and were feasting. Sadly, this pack subsequently contracted tuberculosis and had to be put down.
The slideshow includes two pictures of the African Painted Dogs hunting in the late afternoon.
The slideshow below includes pictures of the African Painted Wild Dogs eating and resting after their kill.
Oddie Aloft by Derrick Knight
Derrick Knight has a fantastic blog that includes interesting book reviews, photographs, and family anecdotes.
This is a short extract from Derrick’s post Oddie Aloft:
Jack Russell terriers are known for burrowing down rabbit holes, not climbing trees after squirrels.

Matthew’s Oddie was, on this occasion, the exception. By the time he began to scale the acacia in Lindum House garden, his prey was long gone;

but he carried on regardless.

Beloved Dogs by Thomas Wikman
Thomas Wikman has two wonderful blogs. The first, https://leonbergerlife.com/, features amusing and heartwarming stories about his late Leonberger dog Bronco, as well as other Leonbergers. It also has a lot of information about the Leonberger breed, the history, care, training, Leonberger organizations, etc. Thomas also wrote a wonderful book about Leonbergers which is available on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/Life-Times-Bronco-von-L%C3%B6wenh%C3%B6hle-ebook/dp/B0B5NN32SR
Thomas’s second blog, https://superfactful.com/, aims to create a long list of facts that are important, not trivia, and that are known to be true yet are either disputed by large segments of the public or highly surprising or misunderstood by many.
Thomas is a dog lover and I enjoyed his special book about his Leonberger which also includes entertaining stories about his other dogs. I love all animals so his blog is a must read for me.
The gallery below features the following photographs in this order:
Bronco-at-three-months: This is a photo of our 3 months old Leonberger dog named Bronco (full name Le Bronco von der Löwenhöhle).
Bronco-hug: This our Leonberger Dog Bronco at one years old (not fully grown) giving me a welcome home hug.
Baylor-and-Baby: Our Labrador Baylor and our German Shepherd named Baby. She was acting like a mother to Bronco. She played with him, protected him, and loved him. Baylor was my first dog.
Ryu-and-Daisy-in-suitcase: Our Japanese Chin Ruy and Pug Daisy sitting in one of our suitcases. They did not like it when we went on trips. This was their way of protesting.
Rollo-pulls-Bronco-tail: Our mini–Australian Shepherd Rollo was a nuisance to our Leonberger dog Bronco. He sat on his back, walked and jumped on his back, played with his tail, and even swung in it like Tarzan. Bronco never lost his temper.
Rollo-chewed-shoe: the artist and his art. Rollo, our mini–Australian Shepherd used to chew shoes, and he still does it sometimes. However, he knows he is not supposed to. Thereof his shocked expression when I caught him red handed destroying my shoe. On another occasion I caught him walking through the hallway with my shoe in his mouth. He stared at me, like in the picture, turned around and then he tip toed back to where my other shoe was and put it back perfectly and turned the correct way.
Dogsled in the snow: We are at the ice hotel in Jukkasjärvi northern Sweden. We are taking a dogsled tour (left sled). I am sitting in the back. My wife is in front of me, and our three children are in front of her. Don’t worry. There were a lot more dogs, but they were outside the photo.

These are the three dogs that have blessed my life with their love and have long since crossed that rainbow bridge. The first, Brandy, joined the family as a puppy. She traveled with us to Japan and back! She was also the original inspiration for Yseult in my One with Nature series. Misti, the second, originally belonged to my grandfather. She’d been part of a litter, I’m told, that was found after being left for dead. Grandpa Jim took her in, and she came to live with us after he died (Brandy was still alive then). Jade, who literally did press me against the sliding glass door in this picture, was a rescue whom my parents adopted after Brandy and Misti had both died.

Here are photos of my dogs. They all three came to our house when they were babies and stayed. Buddy, the brown one, is 15. Someone left him when he was a few days old. I found him with his head stuck in one of the iron bars in our front gate. I poured cooking oil on his head and body then I was able to pull him through the bars. We cleaned him up and he’s still here. Whitey, 4 years, came to visit when he was 1 month. Tony’s nephew couldn’t keep Whitey. He’s still here also. Negra, which means black in Spanish, is 3. I heard a noise at the front gate one night. It was a puppy about 2 weeks old with its head stuck in the gate. I used oil on her head and was able to get her unstuck. Negra is still here. I guess our house is known as the dog refuge!
