A behooving by Gerald Yelle

They said it was a one-sided argument.

They didn’t want to hear

about it anymore. They said they had

to get a new memory card.

Cause we’re living on a saturated

landmass and it isn’t only water. It was

cold and it made me dizzy.

I thought it was about to rain and made

a run for it and squeezed

through the fence so cars wouldn’t

follow. I climbed the ladder

to the roof where it was starting to

drizzle. The gate was locked

but I knew where the stairs were.

I used to go there to get my injections.

I used to act all innocent

like a rhododendron leaf poking in

from out of the frame.

I used to jiggle the handle

where a spider in a bowl of candle

wax knocked the stars off their

stems. I used to shake

like that till the plumbing got

fixed and the neighbors got deported.
