Now All Lame Duck and Whalebone by Gerald Yelle

photo of a woman standing behind a transparent umbrella

She said it was only something to keep us dry.

I said it’s supposed to keep us from

getting sick. She said both things were true

but as soon as the sign telling us to

keep it on came down it was goodbye mask.

I said I never did do the dishes without

getting wet. I paid more attention

to the windows in the water and listened to

all the watchers down there exchanging winks

and making signs for maybe now or

maybe later. I didn’t know what it meant.

Nobody knew. Except those who did

outnumbered those who didn’t and the water

filled with thoughts and prayers –thoughts

and prayers having more to do with

undertow than whether or not or how and how

it was my arms and legs melted into

hers and we carved our names on trees

and tossed bits of lettuce in one another’s hair.
