Artforms and Artists from Around the World – The photograph of Laura Putman

Laura Putman has a lovely nature blog. This is her introduction to her blog:

I am humbled by the magnificence and beauty of our planet, it is incomparable. I’ve loved and enjoyed nature since I was a young girl. I’ve been a serious photographer for over a decade. In 2012 I’ve developed this blog and dedicated my photography to wildlife, nature conservation and telling stories with my camera. Wild animals are naturally intertwined with the health of our ecosystem and vital to humanity’s existence. Our dependency on nature spans basic needs (food, water, oxygen) to cultural, spiritual, and mental health benefits, forming the natural heritage that supports human existence. It is my intention as a nature enthusiast to capture the essence of the natural world in the form of mindful, inspiring images to connect people with the sacredness of it all

I also write, I created a blog focused on being and living authentically, The Wisdom of a Woman’s Heart, if you’re interested, here is the link laurasusanputman.wordpress.com.

Tell us a bit about Laura Putman and how you became involved in photography

My interest in photography began when I was young. My mom always had a camera around to take photos of my family as we were growing up, our family events, the holidays and places we traveled to. When I became a mom I carried on the tradition, the joy of photography and having a permanent record of the history of my family became a natural part of my life.

My beginning in nature photography was a natural extension of what I already knew. It was a creative outlet after I left the business world. In the beginning, I only had the confidence to share my images with friends and family. As I gained experience and my love for nature deepened my interest in photography continued to grow. I became more self-assured in the technical aspects of my camera and the expectations of photographers. So, In 2012 I decided to create a blog to share my photos with a larger audience; eight years later I created a website to promote my conservation message and sell my images.

Laura says: «This photograph is of an Eastern Swallowtail butterfly taken in a wild garden in a nature park. I love this image for a couple of reasons, I had my mind set to photograph a swallowtail butterfly and it just showed up and I love the contrasting colors.»

What is the purpose of your blog? What do you hope to achieve through your posts?

The purpose of my blog is to share the many climate and wildlife victories that are primarily limited to peer publications, the involved nonprofit websites and dedicated environmental and solutions journalism. Its also a place to discover the many benefits nature has on humanity.

The posts are to share positive progress made by the organizations that work so hard to address climate change and their achievements of protecting our planet and preserving the many wild creatures that face extinction. My posts also promote the benefits of viewing and being in nature and how it improves our mental and physical health.

What Laura says about this photograph: «This photograph is of an American Bison. I love this because it was my first photo of a large mammal since I began nature photography and it’s iconic. The bison is the national mammal of the United States, designated by law in 2016.»

What sort of camera do you use for your photography? A cell phone or do you have a digital or other camera?

I have a digital camera, it’s a Canon EOS 77D with a variety of lenses and it has the ability to take videos. I recently began to use my cell phone camera in instances where that’s what I have available, I use that for both still photos and taking videos.

Please share some of your favourite photographs

This photograph is of a double peony, I like this because of the beauty of the flower itself and the light was just perfect that morning.

This photograph is of a Tricolor Heron taken at a botanical garden. I’d wanted to capture this bird for some time but the opportunity never arose until I was there at the garden, it was a memorable day.

This photograph is of the red buttes of Sedona, Arizona. That was the first time I’d returned to Sedona in over 20 years. The light, the scene and the weather were just perfect, I will never forget that day.

What’s next for Laura Putman?

What’s next? I will continue to improve the techniques that improve my images. I’ll also continue to promote the healing benefits of nature, conservation and wildlife preservation for the whole of humanity. My intention is to make a difference in people’s perception of nature so I’ll continue to seek ways to accomplish that.
