“Unfinished Winter” by Yongbo Ma

You shall grow mature once this winter passes
pure garments part the chilly air
water flows ceaselessly within your sleeves

When winter wears away
some things shine sharp and dazzling bright
too piercing for the eye to hold in sight
like half an abandoned plowshare buried in snow
mirrors lay bare every hill and hollow

Sunlight of the whole year descends all of a sudden
wandering in snow slowly grows warm and pleasant
plain wooden huts stand along river sands
filled with withered leaves, the last butterflies of lands

They shall not burst apart and scatter far and wide
tiny hoof prints circling round inside
breathe vivid life into the whole mountainside

Vegetables stored for winter grow on to soft melody
sit in silence when the lamp dies away
the mountain moon arrives right on its way
all thoughts within turn lucid and clear all day

Rumbling glimmers flash now and then beyond the pass
strangers come climbing to lean by the southern glass
their burning gazes search your inner space
yet you have gone ahead of their pace
chanting root words behind worldly days
tending the earth in melancholy ways

They bring tidings time and again
clear glass in their hands lights up the winter plain
along the road they came from far away
rows of red machines creep slow and sway
and sunlight of the whole year comes to stay
