he knew her as Nancy,
but, she
reminded
him of Jane,
so,
just to be safe,
he called her Debbie,
and at
the end of the day,
it really didn’t matter,
because
he only saw her once,
and that
was the summer
he turned seventeen,
and
he knew
as sure as Shakespeare did,
that
all the world’s a stage.
~~
wearing only a tee-shirt and shorts,
he sat
on the steps,
smoking the last
cigarette of the day.
he’d been
trying to quit,
but it just felt right,
sitting there,
watching the kids run by,
followed by the occasional pretty girl,
who
would
or would not smile.
