About The Great Sphinx of Tanis

The Great Sphinx of Tanis is an ancient Egyptian sculpture of a sphinx carved from pink granite. It was discovered in the ruins of the Temple of Amun-Ra in Tanis, the capital of Egypt during the 21st and 22nd dynasties.

The Sphinx is inscribed with the cartouches of several different pharaohs including Amenemhat II, Merneptah, and Shoshenq I. This practice of rulers carving their own names over their predecessors’ names, known as usurping, allowed new kings to claim the legacy of older monuments.

The Sphinx comprises a recumbent lion’s body (representing divine power) topped with a human pharaonic head. The statue is wearing the traditional nemes headdress, a royal cobra on the forehead, and a straight false beard.

The Great Sphinx of Tanis has visible damage to its nose which Egyptologist believe to have been deliberate vandalism. Ancient Egyptian sometimes purposefully damaged statues in this way to ‘deactivate’ the spiritual power of the image.

My photographs of the Great Sphinx of Tanis at the Louvre Museum in Paris

There was a great crowd around the Great Sphinx of Tanis when I saw it at the Louvre over the Easter weekend. I had to be quite pushy to get to the front to take my photographs. TC always hangs back and pretends he doesn’t know me – grin!

I believe I saw the same thing when we visited the Louvre. Your pictures are great. When I was a kid I read in a French bande dessinée (comic book) called Asterix that Asterix friend Obelix, who was very overweight, tried to climb the Sphinx and because of his weight he broke off the Sphinxes nose. This allegedly took place during the reign of the Roman dictator Julius Ceasar. Cleopatra was not happy with Obelix’ faux pas. Allegedly it was a beautiful nose.

Hi Thomas, I don’t recall that story but I did read Astrid and obelisk when I was a girl. Only the ones the library had though 🙃

There are many of them. They are fun, even when you are an adult. I think we have 40 of them that I bought for the kids.

Robbie, I visited the Louvre during my first two trips to Paris (decades ago) but didn’t visit during my more-recent third and fourth trips. I probably saw it but I’m not remembering. 🙂

I find Egypt and everything about it, fascinating! And years ago, I had a cartouche of my name made. It made me feel as though I were a part of Egypt in some small way.

How amazing to be able to see this in person, Robbie! I remember reading about this in National Geographic mag as a kid, then more about it in middle school. Sphynxes are fascinating!

I am always humbled when I begin to think of the great civilizations that have come before us and then just disappeared into the history books.

This is one of those times.

Yes, all civilizations rise and fall. The longest was the Pandyan Empire in Southern India followed by the Roman Empire but they all decline eventually.

The Sphynx is such an incredible source of story inspiration, Robbie — a fascinating post. By the way, I’m including your «Neema» book in my post for the color orange this week. It should be ready by Wednesday. Big hugs.
