BURKA by Uchechukwu Onyedikam

Walking the streets of empty night

drunk on dreams with a head

stuffed up with sleep —

peeling of the burka off.

I want to see tomorrow

in the morning of my wake

where I don’t have to veil my eyes

and pretend to be awake.

This too is me counting

my holy praying beads —

off my lips with chants of autonomy

that raises me up: off this slumber!
