Hi everyone, it’s Robbie Cheadle here with you today with the July post in my Photography section on LatinosUSA – English Edition. This month I am featuring Creatures from the Ocean.

I would love all the photographers out there to contribute. If you have a photograph to contribute to any of the above themes, please email me at cheadlerobbie@gmail.com and use the title Photography. Please also include a short write up about your photograph.

Dubai Underwater Zoo by Robbie Cheadle

Last year Michael and I stopped in Dubai for 24 hours on route to London. We took the opportunity to visit the Dubai Underwater Zoo in Dubai Mall. It is one of the largest and most beautiful aquariums in the world and contains more than 33,000 aquatic animals and the world’s largest collection of sand tiger sharks.

It is not easy to take good pictures through glass but these are the best shots I got during our 2,5 hour tour of this aquarium.

Dolphin watching by Dan Antion

Dan Antion is a terrific writer and a very engaged and supportive blogger. He runs two weekly photography challenges, CFFC and Thursday Doors.

Dan also has some wonderful books which you can find out more about here: https://nofacilities.com/my-books/

Dan contributed two lovely photographs from a dolphin watching cruise he attended in Florida.

Tofino Orcas by Wayne Barnes

Thank you to nature and wildlife photographer, Wayne Barnes, for allowing me to showcase some of his gorgeous photographs here. You can find Wayne’s photographs on his blog, Tofino Photography, here: https://tofinophotography.wordpress.com/.

Several of Wayne’s wonderful photographs feature in my poetry book, Square Peg in a Round Hole, which is available from Amazon US here: https://www.amazon.com/Square-Peg-Round-Hole-Creativity-ebook/dp/B0CW1H3SQV

What Wayne says about this wonderful orca sighting:

«I searched for about 3 hours but finally found them way down Tofino inlet past Barryman point. There were four of them! I immediately recognized them as the pod I had seen two weeks earlier! Almost right off the bat I saw three total breaches! I was lucky to get them! While I was consumed with getting the shots I didn’t notice that another pod of 5 had joined them. I was surrounded by them! They all seemed to be very happy! One of them came up behind me and vocalized! I’ve never heard a Orca speak before and was startled! I continued to hear many differently vocalizations! I wondered if they were upset with me being around them but soon realized that If they were they would not be hanging around and they would be avoiding me. They jumped out of the water, slapped their tails, rolled and talked loudly to each other!

You can read the rest of Wayne’s post here: https://tofinophotography.wordpress.com/category/tofino-orcas/

A box of live crabs by Derrick Knight

Derrick Knight is a wonderful photographer and shares delightful book reviews and garden and home posts on his blog. You can find links to the related blog posts beneath each set of photographs.

Derrick has provided some wonderful seed photographs which feature in the gallery below. You can find some of his seed pictures in this post from his blog: https://derrickjknight.com/2023/08/16/seed-heads/

A photograph of slowly jerking crabs piled on top of each other in strong boxes on the deck of a fishing boat.

Picture caption: A box of living crabs

Derrick says: «One of these living creatures climbed over the lip of its container and landed on its back on the quayside. In my childhood I had often righted stag beetles in the same predicament, but I didn’t fancy providing a helping hand on this occasion.»

Picture caption: A single crab that fell out of the box and onto its back on the quayside.

«Instead, I alerted the young man who had brought in his boat, mentioning that I wasn’t going to pick it up. Describing the crab as an escapee, he demonstrated that it couldn’t pinch because their claws were nipped when they were caught. This certainly wasn’t a dog’s dinner.»

You can read more about the crab adventure in Derrick’s post here: https://derrickjknight.com/2017/09/15/not-a-dogs-dinner/

The post includes some excellent photographs of boats.

A great display of various types of sea life. When my husband was in the Navy on an aircraft carrier, dolphins would follow the ship. He enjoyed watching them frolic and play.

I enjoyed all of the photos, yours included. I’m amazed you could take such clear photos through glass. Derrick’s crabs made me sad. That poor one, stuck upside down. 😦 I would have been tempted to put them right side up, particularly if I found some gloves nearby.

Hi Pam, taking photos through glass is a challenge. Pressing the camera against the glass helps a lot. Those crabs were destined for the table. It’s best not to think about it 💗

I love visiting aquariums! There’s something so relaxing about watching the creatures swimming. A few years ago we were on a beach in FL when a group of dolphins put on a show for us very close to the shore. I’d never seen anything like it, and several people recorded them.
