TWO HIGHBALLS

two highballs
and dinner
at the asylum’s
whiskey bar
ripping daisies
on the linoleum
the night nurse says
she loves me
while autumn
carves into my youth
i will save
a song for you
for whom i once
scuttled my ships
refresh my glass
there’s no applause
the bar is empty
the band
forgot the music

Love the painting of the highball glass as well as the poem.

Thank you so much Pat! Actually I do not know if that was a real highball or just a glass of whiskey…

The rhythm really tightens to a focus in those last six lines — nicely done!
