Photography – Buildings & Architecture: Universities

Hi everyone, it’s Robbie Cheadle here with you today with my May post in the Buildings & Architecture Photography section on LatinosUSA – English Edition. For this post, I am focusing on Universities.

Universities by Robbie Cheadle

I’m sharing two lots of university photographs today. The first set is of two Universities I passed while wandering around Paris in April. The first is Universite de Paris Institut d’Art et d’Archeologie. The second is Sorbonne Universite – Observatoire des Sciences de l’Universe.

The second set of photographs are of the Great Hall at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg where my older son, Gregory, is studying a Masters in Topological Mathematics.

St Mary’s College of Maryland by Andrew McDowell

What Andrew says about these photographs:

I graduated from St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 2012, a campus that immediately captivated me (not to mention it was on the St. Mary’s River). As a double major in History and English, most of my history classes were held in Kent Hall, and most of my English classes were held in Montgomery Hall, known on campus as Monty. I had a few classes in a basement classroom in Calvert Hall, which is where I lived in a single room during my senior year (my room’s window can be seen on the upper balcony at its right). The Garden of Remembrance is between Kent and Calvert, and it is one of the Seven Wonders of St. Mary’s. I often walked in the church’s graveyard, just across from Calvert, and looked out at the river from there. The Rectory is another building on campus.

Those are all great photos. I have photos of ships and submarines somewhere. I think I mentioned this already but I once took a class (graduate level class) on Topological Mathematics, or Topology. It was a very abstract and a very tough class. Afterwards I was saying, well I am not doing that again. That was too difficult. I am so impressed that Gregory is focusing on such a challenging topic. It is certainly a topic for the very brightest.

Hi Thomas, Gregory is bright and he works very hard. He is enjoying his masters degree so far. I’m pleased you understand what he is studying. I have a reasonable understanding of what topology is all about but I couldn’t do this maths

I have an advanced degree in another field (applied physics and electrical engineering / robotics) but some fields are just tougher than others, and your son picked a very challenging field, a field I could not handle.

Yes Topology is becoming increasingly important both in Mathematics and in Physics and Cosmology.

I understand the same. Topology is a good choice. Thanks, Thomas

Gregory didn’t want to pursue physics. He preferred maths. We are all different with unique talents. I wouldn’t want to study physics or maths. I preferred accounting and economics.

Yes you are right Robbie. I like maths too, but not so much that I would do Topology. It is just too abstract and difficult.

I laughed when Greg told me it was abstract and explained topology. Fantasy in maths – Greg’s my son after all 🤣😝

Oh he explained topology to you. I guess fantasy in maths is a good way to put it, but it has real applications. He could have helped me with my class if he had been alive 35 years ago. In any case, imagination plus abstract mathematical reasoning, I can see how that comes from you. Stuff that blows your mind.

😁🌈, oh yes, I have to listen to a lot of stuff about his courses. He showed me some of his proposal for his thesis too. I am upskilling 😂🤣

That is probably very complicated but very exciting. Upskilling is a good way to put it. I need to upskill some too.

I’m a big fan of older university architecture. Those classical styles tend to add some gravitas to places of higher learning even though the inside may not always be best suited to new technological subjects. Nice selection, Robbie, shared on Twitter.

    Best wishes, Pete.

I agree, Pete. Lack of discipline is one of the biggest challenges facing societies currently.

Saint Mary’s College has a beautiful campus! I love Garden of Remembrance. The architecture of my alma mater, Old Dominion University, in no way aligns with the traditions of the Old Dominion.

I loved the photo of the Sorbonne. I did a semester there, studying French a life time ago. It’s still one of my favourite places in Paris!
