You have a freshly baked cherry pie

sitting on the window –

authentic aroma love for me.

It goes beyond that however.

I marvel at your basic elements skills.

The ability to combine

ice water, unsalted butter, salt, sugar

and all-purpose flower like elements

of passion and create a dynamic dough.

The laughter as we picked

the cherries from the trees

and the red juice of your passion

as you pit the cherries into a bowl.

Then forming the dough in the pie plate

with practiced patience

and adding the sugared cherries.

There is a skill in weaving latticed

cinnamon pie strips

in artistic perfection across the top.

I see you wipe a wisp of hair

away from your face with your floured hand.

It is important to preheat,

like flirtation, before placing the pie

on the middle rack of the hot oven.

The aroma of that baking pie

burrows deep into my helpless heart.
