The sun sheds light
on the wounded palms of Jesus—
Did the assassinations happen
before, or after,
the crucifixion?
Was the slow construction of belief
strong enough to endure
the cruelty of oppression?
The sun sheds light
on the wounded palms of Jesus—
Did the perpetrators ever seek
His forgiveness?
Was the sluggish recovery of truth
solid enough to withstand
the forgetfulness of history?
Author’s Note:
In 1980 in Taiwan, the mother and two young daughters of a political dissident were murdered in their home. The crime was undoubtedly committed by the regime. The site of the killings, believed to be cursed, was later transferred under the title of a new church: the Presbyterian Church of the Light of Justice.
