“TWO VISITS I’LL NEVER FORGET” by Carl Bernard Schwartz

I.

Gusty winds were the culprit, and the neighbor
renting the house just south of mine had never
dealt with 65 mph flurries; there was no warning
whatsoever until all of a sudden, the formerly erect,
young palm tree on their property broke off at the
base and fell on top of some hedges that stood
between his driveway and mine. I heard the
commotion and stepped outside to get a better view.
The fallen palm was blocking access to my driveway,
so I got to work: went to my shed and pulled out my
18” corded chainsaw, oiled it, attached a suitable
extension cord, and started cutting. Soon after that,
another neighbor joined me with his 18” gas chain
saw and we made good progress. I volunteered my
front lawn as a repository for the cuttings until the
neighbor’s landlord could send professional help
the next day.

II.

Thought I heard someone or something moving
about in my backyard. And then there was a quite
distinct tapping on my sliding glass patio door.
I slid the drapes aside and beheld a marvelous
sight: my neighbor to the north had 2 pit bulls
and kept them well fed and well tended. And there
they were, right on my patio, both standing on their
hind feet in that classic doggy in the window pose,
unable to contain their exuberance about escaping
from the boundaries of their own back yard, to make
the most of their opportunity to explore more of the
neighborhood. These pit bulls were worlds away
from attack mode, they just wanted to sniff more
things. I went next door and got their master, who
brought a leash with 2 fittings. He walked them
back to their home, promising to repair the fence.
