Photography – Buildings & Architecture: Fountains

Published by

Hi everyone, it’s Robbie Cheadle here with you today with my April post in the Buildings & Architecture Photography section on LatinosUSA – English Edition. For this post, I am focusing on Fountains.

Fontaines de la Concorde by Robbie Cheadle

The Fontaines de la Concorde are two monumental fountains located in the Place de la Concorde in the centre of Paris. Designed by Jacques Ignace Hittorff, they were completed in 1840 during the reign of King Louis-Philippe. The south fountain commemorates the maritime commerce and industry of France and the north fountain commemorates navigation and commerce on the rivers of France.

Slide the bar below to see the two fountains.

European Fountains by Miriam Hurdle

Miriam Hurdle has a wonderful blog where she shares book reviews, poetry, and updates about family events. Miriam is a fellow contributor to This Is How We Eat anthology by contributing editor Yvette Prior. You can read her post about this anthology here: https://theshowersofblessings.com/2026/03/08/this-is-how-we-eat-stories-about-food-culture-and-connection-book-tour/

Miriam has some excellent books which you can find on her blog.

What Miriam says about these three photographs:

Photo #1

This photo is the Fountain of Neptune at the Villa d’Este in Tivoli, Italy. We visited this 16th-century Villa d’Este, a UNESCO World Heritage site, 19 miles to the east of Rome during our Italy trip in June 2025. It is considered a masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance Garden. The garden’s numerous fountains, waterfalls, and pools are fed by the Aniene River, powered by gravity, utilizing natural water pressure and showcasing remarkable hydraulic engineering for its time. The major water features were on at the time of our visit, but the smaller fountains had no water. The villa’s interior features exquisite decorations, including frescoes, stucco work, and marble sculptures.

Photos #2 and #3

We were in Spain for our anniversary in August 2016. The photos are the water show of the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc in Barcelona. This attraction features a spectacular show combining music, colored lights, and choreographed water movement. It was originally designed by Carles Buïgas for the 1929 International Exposition. The fountain uses over 3,600 water jets and is equipped with modern LED lighting technology. Two people were leaving and gave me their spot to have a better view.

Fountains by Derrick Knight

Derrick Knight is a wonderful photographer and shares delightful book reviews and garden and home posts on his blog. You can find links to the related blog posts beneath each set of photographs.

The photograph of Sam below, not yet 2 years old, was taken during a holiday in France. Sam is splashing around in the fountain in Villeneuvette.

Villeneuvette is a small village made up of a group of buildings initially erected in the 17th century to create a royal clothmaking factory and provide accommodation for its workers. Apart from a hotel and restaurant, the buildings are now restricted to residential use, many for holiday purposes.

You can read more about this holiday and Villeneuvette here: https://derrickjknight.com/2022/01/03/a-knights-tale-87-villeneuvette/

Derrick’s second photograph is of the Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square and was taken in 1963. You can read more about this Christmas tradition here: https://derrickjknight.com/2024/12/02/advent-day-2/

Darlene Foster

These delightful photographs were contributed by children’s author, Darlene Foster. You can find out more about Darlene and her exciting Amanda books on her blog here: https://darlenefoster.wordpress.com/.

This is what Darlene’s says about these gorgeous photographs:

I love fountains! Here are some photos from a Mediterranean cruise we took. At every stop, we found an amazing fountain or two. Two from Aix-en-Provence, France, one from Genoa, Italy and one from Messina, Sicily (which was not spouting water at the time but still impressive).

Those are all great photos of fountains. I’ve seen the Fontaines de la Concorde in person a few times. I wish I had taken photos of the fountains in Aix-En_Provence. Aix-en-Provence, is nicknamed the «City of a Thousand Fountains». I should have some dog photos though.

Hi Thomas, before I met Dan Antion and discovered his Thursday Doors challenge, I never thought of photographing ordinary things I saw like doors and windows. I have learned to look with a closer eye because of WP friends. It’s one of the wonderful benefits of blogging – we learn so many things. I look forward to your dog photographs – I am sure you must have a few (grin!)

Hi Derrick, thank you for your wonderful support of this photography series. That comparison display is a feature I only recently discovered on WP. It is rather fun for certain displays.

Lovely pictures Robbie – there are so many wonderful fountains, they are so appealing.  I do love fountains (second to waterfalls) the sound as well as sight of them, and when dressed with lights at night they are beautiful (I also have seen the magical display in Barcelona Miriam photographed) the water looks to be dancing to music – I must have taken a hundred photos!  I have a small “zen” fountain in my garden  💞

You chose a great selection for the theme, Robbie. I have some photos of the Trevi Fountain in Rome, taken in 2002. One actually has Julie flinging the traditional ‘three coins’ in, frozen in the air above her head. But they were taken with a film camera, and I have never scanned them. (Maybe one day) Shared on Twitter.

    Best wishes, Pete.

Hi Pete, I also have a lot of photographs taken with a film camera. My wedding photos were film and so where the photos of Greg’s very early years. I occasionally get a bee in my bonnet and go to the effort of scanning a few. I’m pleased you like this post.
