Street & Other Public Art – Pixelated Video Game Mosaics in Paris

Published by

on

When I was in Paris recently, I noticed a coupled of small pixelated art pieces on a wall in the Jewish Quarter. TC and I were on a food tour so I asked the guide about them. She said that these mosaics could be found all over Paris and were the work of French artist Invader. Naturally, I looked for more pieces all over Paris and I found quite a few. I also found one in Blois when we stopped in this city for 1 1/2 hours for lunch when we visited Loire Valley.

These are the mosaics I discovered on my first day in Paris. They were in Sectors 4 and 3 (Marais and the Jewish Quarter).

These artworks are modelled after 8-bit video games from the 1970s and 1980s and are part of Invader’s «Space Invaders» project. The first mosaic was installed in Paris but these mosaics are now found in 79 cities around the world.

These two mosaics were outside The Shakespeare and Company (bookstore across from Notre Dame).

These next mosaics were in the area surrounding Place Dalida.

No two mosaics are alike and they are all made to last. Invader is trying to take over the world with his ‘invasions’ and there are approximately 4056 invaders in 79 cities.

This next mosaic was near our second hotel, The Courtyard By Marriott Paris Gare De Lyon.

Invader’s goal with this project is to liberate art from what he calls «its usual alienators», that being museums and other institutions. It is about bringing art out and into the public realm so that everyone can enjoy it.

This is the final mosaic I saw and it was near the Orsay Museum.

Have you seen any of these mosaics while out and about? Let me know in the comments.

Those Mosaics are pretty cool. I recognized Asterix. Asterix and Obelix were my favorite Bande dessinée when I was a kid. I still enjoy them.

Looking at it a second time I noticed that the one of top looks like Lucky Luke, another of my favorite Bande dessinée (as a kid).

I have never seen any street art like those, but I like the one of Asterix. I always enjoyed the Asterix comic books when I was younger. https://toppsta.com/books/series/4792/asterix
