A List Poem, and 2 Observation Poems by Carl Bernard Schwartz

AFFORDABILITY

Sometimes it seems as if the
bads are more durable than the goods
like getting permanent perforations in stockings,
or a motor vehicle that is a lemon,
or a new house built on an old landfill,
or earning a degree in a subject now obsolete,
or choosing which family member doesn’t get fed
this month so necessary house repairs can be done,
then all one can do is toss the garbage in the trash
and set out those nice paper plates to receive
whatever canned food one is given

TOO LATE FOR MERCY

The punishment cycle has already
begun, all contents of piggy banks
went to the food banks, short-term
relief from starvation; long history
of not enough has dug an abyss too
wide and deep to bridge, with gainful
employment staring, gloating, on the
other side; cleanliness and positive
attitude are big dogs that roam free
of their leash exploring neighborhoods,
celebrating minor finds like they are
treasures to be savored, not shared

EGO MANIA

For some reason, egos grow like weeds
when left alone during periods of sleep,
independent of the baggage of human
autonomic systems, linked up with
enormous resources to leave the soul
and wander around, no limits; while
in your dreams, nudity, inhibitions, and
shortcomings dominate the spectrum of
choices, leaving one to awaken feeling
compromised, wondering why, again,
why me?
