Hi everyone, it’s Robbie Cheadle here with you today with my April post in the Buildings & Architecture Photography section on LatinosUSA – English Edition. For this post, I am focusing on Looking Up.

Grand Place, Brussels by Robbie Cheadle

Grand Place (Grote Markt) is the central, UNESCO-listed heart of Brussels. It is renowned for its stunning 17th century architecture including opulent guildhalls and the Gothic Town Hall.

European Buildings by Miriam Hurdle

Miriam Hurdle has a wonderful blog where she shares book reviews, poetry, and updates about family events. Miriam is a fellow contributor to This Is How We Eat anthology by contributing editor Yvette Prior. You can read her post about this anthology here: https://theshowersofblessings.com/2026/03/08/this-is-how-we-eat-stories-about-food-culture-and-connection-book-tour/

Miriam has some excellent books which you can find on her blog.

What Miriam says about these two photographs: My husband and I visited Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, Germany in 2013. Neuschwanstein Castle is a 19th-century Romanesque Revival palace perched on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau, at an elevation of approximately 925 to 969 meters (roughly 3,000 to 3,180 feet) above sea level. Our tour arranged for us to climb the hill by horse-drawn carriage. It was a cold day. The coachman gave each of us a blanket to put on our laps and gave us a shot of vodka, saying it would make us feel warm. I took the photo on the way up the hill.

Commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as a personal retreat, it is famously known as the inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. The construction of the castle was begun in 1869 but was never fully completed before Ludwig’s death in 1886.

In Barcelona, Spain, I took a photo of the Sagrada Familia across the street. To frame the entire building, I literally lay flat on the ground, pointing the camera toward the sky. My husband was guarding me from the foot traffic.

The Sagrada Família, a massive Roman Catholic Basilica in Barcelona, Spain. It was designed by the renowned Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. The construction began in 1882. The goal is to finish the core structure, including the central tower, by 2026. The artistic and decorative elements, along with the controversial stairway leading to the main entrance, are expected to continue work until roughly 2034, making it one of the longest-running construction projects in the world. The Nativity Façade and the Crypt of the Sagrada Família were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2005, the parts built during Gaudí’s lifetime. The Sagrada Família reached its maximum height of 172.5 meters (566 feet) following the installation of the top cross on the Tower of Jesus Christ on February 20, 2026. This makes it the tallest church in the world.

I would also like to visit that castle. I will be visiting two castles in France over Easter though so I have plenty to be grateful for.

It’s worth visiting the Neuschwanstein Castle, Thomas! Each room is decorated with a theme. For instance, one room is decorated with everything brought back from China!

A very nice selection, Robbie. I have been the Grande Place, and the Sagrada Familia, but not the German castles. (Except Colditz.) Shared on Twitter.

    Best wishes, Pete.

Amazing architecture ladies! I’ve never been to Brussels so it was all new to me. I have been to Barcelona, but only for 2 days decades ago and I never got to see this incredible building. Maybe one day I’ll be able to visit it when/if it’s ever completely finished. 🙂
