Photography – Animals

Hi everyone, it’s Robbie Cheadle here with you today with the March post in my Photography section on LatinosUSA – English Edition. This month I am featuring turtles, tortoises, and terrapins for this category.

I would love all the photographers out there to contribute. If you have a photograph of people at a wedding to share in the People category, please email me at cheadlerobbie@gmail.com and use the title Photography – People. Please also include a short write up about your photograph.

Terrapins by Robbie Cheadle

During a trip to St Lucia in South Africa in early January this year, we were lucky enough to see terrapins at Hluhluwe Game Reserve.

Terrapins are small, semi aquatic reptiles that live in freshwater or brackish, slightly salty water like marshes, swamps, and ponds.

Swimming with turtles in Port St Charles

Derrick Knight has a fantastic blog that includes interesting book reviews, photographs, and family anecdotes. The below information and extract is from the following blog post by Derrick: https://derrickjknight.com/2015/11/14/swimming-with-turtles/. Do go over and read the rest of this post. Take a look around while you are there.

Click on the slideshow to view a selection of photographs from a swimming trip in the waters of Port St Charles harbour in March 2004:

Louisa just had to join the turtles, like pebbles washed by tidal waters, the colours of their carapaces brightly contrasting with their natural element which reflected the skies above.

Terrapins- that was a new word for me. We don’t have turtles- but it looks like swimming with them would be very exciting!

Hi Violet, I would also enjoy swimming with turtles. This is the first time I’ve seen terrapins in the wild and I was thrilled.

I remember my uncle keeping pet terrapins in a tank in his house. They grew quite large and he eventually gave them to a zoo. Nice photos.

Shared on Twitter for you, Robbie. Best wishes, Pete.

Hi Pete, a terrapin would be an interesting pet. I know someone who has a leopard tortoise. You have to have a license here to have one as they are protected. They are difficult to care for as they can die very easily when they are young.

I did not even know about Terrapins. Now I’ve learned something. The photos are great yours and Derrick’s. Our big Leonberger Bronco ate our wedding album. My wife was not happy. However, I think still find some.

Hi Thomas, this is the first time I’ve seen a terrapin. I’m pleased you enjoyed this week’s photographs. I’m hoping to get lots of wedding’s pictures. It doesn’t have to be the bride and groom, it can be any people at a wedding.

I learned something too, Thomas! I thought Terrapin was just another name for a tortoise but it’s not! Now I’m really glad I pulled that tortoise out of the fish pond a couple of years ago. The dog was scaring it and it slipped in! I have no idea whose tortoise it was but it never came back.

I was just thinking that they’re almost like the not-so-missing link between the land-based and purely aquatic animals. I must admit I do have a soft spot for them all.

I have a soft spot for them too and, yes, animals that can transition between land and water do hold secrets about evolution.

Lovely photos Robbie, I usually have never seen the wildlife you capture ‘for real’ but in this instance I have also swam with turtles (although a rougher sea so the sand was stirred up) held baby terrapins in the palm of my hands, and (when it was allowed here) had two tortoises as pets – I adore them all 💞
