Hi everyone, it’s Robbie Cheadle here with you today with the February post in my Photography section on LatinosUSA – English Edition. This month I am featuring water birds for this category.

I would love all the photographers out there to contribute. If you have a photograph of people playing an instrument to share in the People category, please email me at cheadlerobbie@gmail.com and use the title Photography – People. Please also include a short write up about your photograph.

Jacana by Robbie Cheadle

During my January 2026 trip to St Lucia, South Africa, we went on a safari into the Cape Vidal Wetlands. It was a fascinating experience and we saw a number of amazing birds. St Lucia is known for its extensive birdlife.

One of the birds we saw was a jacana. These birds are found in tropical regions around the world. They are noted for their elongated toes and toenails that allow them to spread out their weight while foraging on floating or semi-emergent aquatic vegetation. Female jacanas are fairly unusual in that they are larger than the males. Several jacana species maintain several males in the breeding season and the males are solely responsible for incubating eggs and taking care of the chicks.

Surfbirds by Wayne Barnes

Thank you to nature and wildlife photographer, Wayne Barnes, for allowing me to showcase some of his gorgeous photographs here. You can find Wayne’s photographs on his blog, Tofino Photography, here: https://tofinophotography.wordpress.com/

You can find more Surfbird pictures by Wayne Barnes here:

These are Surfbirds resting. They are migrating right now southward. Rankin rocks provides them with a safe place to rest. No ground predators about. Migratory birds use these places in the same way you would use a hotel on your vacation.

Many birds tuck their beaks into their feathers while they are sleeping.

European Herring Gull by Miriam Hurdle

Miriam Hurdle has a wonderful blog where she shares book reviews, poetry, and updates about family events. You can find her latest post here: https://theshowersofblessings.com/2026/01/08/2025-year-in-review/

Miriam has some excellent books which you can find on her blog.

The European herring gull or simply herring gull (Larus argentatus) is a large gull, up to 66 cm (26 in) long. It breeds throughout the northern and western coasts of Europe. Some European herring gulls, especially those residents in colder areas, migrate farther south in winter, but many are permanent residents, such as in Ireland, Britain, Iceland, or on the North Sea shores. They are a common sight along Italian coasts, rivers, and especially prominent in cities like Rome and Venice, adapting well to urban environments by scavenging food from rubbish and tourists.

When my husband and I were in Venice, the tour director warned us about the gulls stealing food from the tourists. We witnessed a gull snatching the popcorn from a girl and startling her. From the hotel breakfast-room window, we watched a woman having breakfast on the porch by the canal. A gull stole an entire croissant from her plate. The tour director told us that residents and businesses alike couldn’t leave their garbage bins outside to be picked up because the gulls would get into the bins to search for food. Instead, the garbage collectors knock on each door, asking the owners to bring their garbage out for immediate pickup.

Seagulls in general have a special place in my heart ever since I read Jonathan Livingston Seagull in the Chinese translation as a child. The book has been translated into over 40 languages selling millions of copies worldwide.

Hi Thomas, we were warned to be careful of seagulls in the Uk and Belgium.

I can see why. When my oldest son was young he was sitting at a table eating a hot dog when a seagull landed on the table and just grabbed the hot dog with his beak and it dragged out of the hot dog bun and flew off with the hot dog. Well at least he still had the hot dog bun, but he was not happy.

It is a very odd looking bird, Jan. The young English tourist didn’t like this bird. She said it looked like a big spider.

The Jacana’s toes and nails are interestingly long. It makes sense that they help them to stand on the floating vegetables. Thank you for including my seagull photos, Robbie.

Your Jacana’s are especially intriguing. Not only because i have never seen a bird with a foot span like that- but also in that they have been able to curate a male population that broods and raises the offspring. I wonder how they did that and if it can be duplicated in the human mammal.

    1. Avatar de robbiesinspiration

Haha, Violet, you make me laugh. Human males are more like leopards, leave the females to do all the work of raiding the cubs. It seems better with the millennials though.

That was fun! Loved learning about the Jacana and surf birds.

Still, I love seagulls, and it is one of the birds I get to see here. Although, there used to be a lot more. ..?… I’ve noticed that about the sparrows and Monarch Butterflies as well.

Seagulls can be quite the nuisance, but they can also be hilarious.
