Photography – Nature: Unusual Flowers

Hi everyone, it’s Robbie Cheadle here with you today with my January post in the Nature Photography section on LatinosUSA – English Edition. Today, I am showcasing Unusual Flowers.

If you have a places of worship photograph to share in the Buildings & Architecture section, please email me at cheadlerobbie@gmail.com and use the title Photography – Buildings & Architecture. Please also include a short write up about your photograph.

Cycad flowers by Robbie Cheadle

Cycads don’t have ‘flowers’ in the usual sense, they produce ancient gymnosperms (like conifers) that produce distinctive and large, ornamental cones for reproduction with separate male (pollen producing) and female (seed producing) plants. The male cones release pollen to fertilize the female cone, which then develops large seeds, but no fruit.

Bromeliad flower by Laura Putman

Laura’s beautiful blog is is dedicated to nature conservation and promoting organizations that are dedicated to climate change and to saving wildlife.

Laura says: This is a bromeliad flower, I believe from my research that it’s grown in Thailand. I took this in early October of this year at a local botanical garden where their flowers are grown in a 10,000 square foot hothouse complete with mini waterfalls and koi ponds.

Asian Bleeding Heart – I remember taking the photo of this spectacular plant when noticing it in a mini garden behind a block of flats. It was while waiting for my son to finish his basketball practice, one spring morning in April 2016.  I had just recently purchased my Nikon camera then and took it with me everywhere, and while taking this stroll for a couple of hours in waiting, I was happy to find this small treasure out of the blue… as if made of pink hearts like a necklace of tears. It was easy to look for it on the Internet and  find out it is called Bleeding Heart.

Shrimp Plant Flower – I took a photo of this leafy flower in Greece, on the Island of Thassos, with my Canon compact camera, back in 2016 as well. I thought it looked so special, a bit velvety too, its texture in that beautiful bright light. Looking for it on the Internet, I saw that it is an evergreen bush and that these long elegant «reddish leaves» also open, revealing flowers that are white and which extend from the leafy-looking parts called «bracts». These look like or have the color of shrimp, they say, hence the common name of «shrimp flower».

The Cycad and the Bromeliad flowers are new to me, they look quite interesting, special textures somehow. I used to have a potted Moon Orchid… such beautiful white flowers, I remember. Maybe I will post some on my blog too, thank you Suzette for reminding me! 😊 Thank you very much for sharing these, Robbie! 💖

Hi Nicole, the texture of the cycad flower is very different. A little furry.

I had to bring in my flowers because of the cold in Florida last evening. The cycad, which I call a sago palm made it through freezing temps last night, but I brought in my orchids and bromeliad. How odd: summer in South Africa and winter in the USA.

Yes, it is an odd feeling, seeing summers flowers in the middle of winter and vice versa.
