On Your Mark… by Suzanne S. Austin-Hill

Run, children, run!

Take note…the Jacaranda trees bloom.

Their showy clusters of pale purple point the way

to tables adorned with vibrant colors –

    sunny yellow,

    bright orange,

    passionate red.

Your laughter sounds like that of any other child.

You swing around a pole to enter Evergreen.

La Doctora makes this your home,

if only for a little while.

Respect, reason, kindness,

compassion, sense and sensibility

dance from room-to-room

Run, children, run!

Her…

   hands, hold yours tightly

   arms, embrace without question.

ears, listen as if yours is the only voice.

   eyes, see your bright future.

La Doctora faces fear with courage;

                                    danger dissipates before her boldness.

She believes…

   from madness, peace

   from ashes, roses

from the darkness of the barrio, glittering, priceless diamonds

      ….YOU!

Run, children, run!
