Hi everyone, it’s Robbie Cheadle here with you today with my December post in the Nature Photography section on LatinosUSA – English Edition.
Next week, I am featuring photographs of Buildings and Architecture.
If you have a photograph to share in the Buildings and Architecture section, please email me at cheadlerobbie@gmail.com and use the title Photography – Buildings and Architecture. Please also include a short write up about your photograph.
Egret at the Beach by Darlene Foster
This beautiful photograph was contributed by children’s author, Darlene Foster. You can find out more about Darlene and her exciting Amanda books on her blog here: https://darlenefoster.wordpress.com/
Some of Darlene’s books are on sale until 1 January 2026. You can learn more about it here: https://darlenefoster.wordpress.com/2025/12/08/end-of-year-book-sale/
Egrets are a type of heron, a long-legged, long-necked, wading bird. They live in freshwater and saltwater habitats, such as marshes and wetlands, where they spend their day wading in shallow water, catching fish and other creatures. Most species form lifelong pair bonds with their mates and nest and roost in mixed species groups. Although they are found on most continents, Egrets avoid the coldest regions, high mountains, and deserts. They nest in tall trees over water with 10 to 30 other pairs. Most species are relatively vocal, making harsh croaking sounds and squeals. They feed in flocks, waiting in shallow water for fish to swim by before thrusting their beaks to catch their prey. Most animals don’t mess with these large birds; they find safety in numbers by staying in large communities. We often see them here in Spain in orchards, on golf courses and by the beaches.

St Lucia Estuary, South Africa by Robbie Cheadle
My contributions are two photographs of the St Lucia Estuary in South Africa at sunset. The second photograph features hippos in the water.
Google’s AI summary about St Lucia Estuary is as follows: The St Lucia Estuary, South Africa’s largest estuarine system, is a vital part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its incredible biodiversity, hosting huge populations of hippos and crocodiles, diverse birdlife, and various other wildlife in its mosaic of ecosystems, easily explored via boat tours from the town of St Lucia.

June’s Pink Roses by Nicole Sara
My thanks to poet and photographer, Nicole Sara, for this contribution of La Rambla, Barcelona. You can find Nicole on her beautiful blog here: https://starrysteps.wordpress.com/2025/11/14/soothing-blues-for-tankatuesday-poetry-challenge-38-visualize-your-joy-11-11-2025/

After April and May’s spring floral sweep, I usually can’t wait for the beginning of June, to take photos of these pouty roses bursting in all their pink fiery frenzy. They are called Carey Roses, or Bridal Piano, this petal type, and they always transform an overcast day into a fine and fragrant rosy one, when I take their photo. And when I do, the same phrase from a poem by Gertrude Stein comes to mind, «A rose is a rose is a rose»… along with Shakespeare’s, «What’s in a name? That which we call a rose, By any other name would smell as sweet!»

Chesterman’s Beach, Tofino by Wayne Barnes
Thank you to nature and wildlife photographer, Wayne Barnes, for allowing me to showcase some of his gorgeous photographs here. You can find Wayne’s photographs on his blog, Tofino Photography, here: https://tofinophotography.wordpress.com/
Tofino’s premier beach is Chesterman’s beach. If you’ve been here, you most likely have walked along it. From the air it looks like a huge “L”. The length of the “L” is about a mile. It has a rocky island at the bend of the “L” called Frank island. You can walk out to this private island during low tide but not at high tide. The connecting sand bar is called a Trombolo. A trombolo is defined as a bar of sand or shingle joining an island to the mainland.
