Ninety poems celebrating the natural world, most specifically the open prairie. The landscape lies under the horizon, so it appears deceptively empty. But to those who know how to see, there is no lack of discovery and experience.

PATH TAKEN
Path in the woods
barely trod:
do I go
and risk knowing?
What change will it make
in me, my life?
Trees whisper.
Do I listen?
Carefully –
what do they say?
Wind sings Autumn
and leaves crackle
underfoot.
What adventure is life
today?
I walk
treading lightly
with my soul.

GRASS FOREVER
Before dinosaurs,
there was grass.
Before buffalo,
there was grass.
Before humans roamed,
there was grass.
After dinosaurs,
grass remained.
After buffalo stopt roaming,
some grass remained.
After humans –
will grass still remain?
The sun will shine,
there might be rain,
but will grass grow?
What will humans do
before they learn
Earth is precious?

MORNING DREAMING
Mist rising, circling wisps
over still, smooth water.
Silence.
The morning is empty,
even the birds
have not found their voice –
waiting, waiting
for the sun
and warmth and light.
SPLASH!
Ripples cross the lake
gently rock the boat.
The boy stirs,
his sleeping nest
too warm to leave,
the dream
just within reach:
mist circling, rising…
