4 Poems by Maggie Watson

TETHERED

Tethered by our history, we are but strangers now.
In the hush, I comply.
I shall not strangle myself with the knots in the thread.
I have written all the words held within my chest.
While you suppress your emotions with admirable discipline.
Do the words unsaid not lacerate your mouth?
Or do you really have nothing to say?
Would you rather I continue to carry the
burden of frustration as tears stream down my face?
That I refuse to do.
This weight is not mine to carry.
Unravel the web you weaved to protect yourself, or bite your tongue forever.
I do not belong with the detritus, waiting for you to throw
me an anchor when it is clear, you enjoy seeing me drown.

~~

LET THE CROWS FEED

You punish me for doing nothing while serving crumbs.
At least punish me for doing wrong.
I have survived on less than crumbs.
Lambs bleat before they bleed.
Once I might have knelt at your feet.
Passing years are a wonderful thing.
We can regret or accept the wisdom they bring.
I am not a goddess or queen, nor would I claim to be.
I am human at no one’s behest.
Let the crows feed.

~~

CONDEMNED

Built from life’s trials and tribulations.
Bruised but not broken.
Fragile foundations open the door to few.
Only sometimes, with trust and a simple request, “Please, take
a seat at my table, but promise not to break anything.”
Fragile foundations turn to dust when
there is little regard for their contents.
Without respect, everything becomes worthless.
The same applies to me and you.
Because no one cares enough to look beyond the cracks in their
walls before erecting a sign.
COMDEMNED, to lie among the garbage cans.
Why not try opening the windows with kindness
Within bricks, concrete sets.
Fractured people apply bandages to hold the pieces together.
Not every bruise is visible or black and blue.
We should consider this before rubbing salt into their wounds.

~~

POTENT

Your energy is potent.
An unseen force.
A high velocity current, circling my existence.
I feel it pulsating every time I move.
I struggle to focus as your aura envelops me.
How can this be? When I have nothing tangible to hold.
You are invisible, yet I feel a vortex pulling me
into your essence as you render me powerless.
Then you disappear into the mist, as I try to regain control of my mind.

    Congratulations Maggie!

I loved your poems, strong imagery and a vibrant quest for inner peace echoes in each one of them. In «Tethered» this line really resonated: «This weight is not mine to carry.»

    Well done!
