THE LAST DOOR
Doctors distant as the city
does not mean illness will not visit
or ignore any door left open
by a lifetime taken for granted.
Medicine is stopgap,
unable to remedy old habits
paused for doctor visits,
resumed until the next appointment.
The future waits,
until it runs its course,
takes its final toll
once the last door is closed.
