FOR ‘HER’ – a true story by Mike Steeden

I found myself wondering what had happened of ‘Her’ these days. I do hope things are better for her now. You see I once heard of her story on the News a few years ago and I will not give the name of the real gal in this true poem. As you see, I shall call her ‘Her’. The poor girl I mention was an innocent 17 year old being treated worse than a serial killer while held in solitary confinement, all because in this so called ‘Great Land’ the bigwigs hadn’t got a compassionate clue as to how to deal with her. Anyway, here is my previous poem about her from way back. Like many others we do hope she is well these days.

FOR ‘HER
Your cell is just a 12 by 10
No window, no chair, no stool
No lavatory, no sink, no shower
No nothing that isn’t cruel

It’s two years now you’ve been there
Two years alive and on your own
So, you’re different from the others
Stay proud, that’s no reason to lock you up alone

They’ve banged you up solitary
All you’ve got is a mattress on the floor
As a guest in the in The Hotel Confinement
You get your food shoved through the door

So what you’ve got anxiety
Autism, maybe more
Not cared for by the untrained staff
They just don’t know the score

We’re out here thinking of you ‘Her’
I guess we number more than just a few
I hope my words help shame the authorities
Help make them a proper life for you

That’s a powerful and heartfelt poem. My heart goes out to her and to all who suffer like this. 🙏
