These poems are from Dawn Pisturino's best-selling collection Sun Haiku: 365 Days of Sunshine. I have read this collection and am impressed by the countless ways Dawn described our grand sun in a haiku a day.
Dawn's Description of Sun Haiku on Amazon
This collection of traditional and non-traditional haiku is dedicated to the sun and its effects on people, animals, and the environment. Many ancient cultures worshipped the sun as the giver and sustainer of life. As the center of our solar system, life on Earth depends on the sun to grow and thrive. Of course, like anything else, too much of a good thing can have negative consequences: skin cancer, drought, cataracts, shriveled up crops, and more. That's why we do what we can to protect ourselves while taking advantage of the sun's positive energy. Come join me in honoring the most important body in our solar system!
Back Story from Dawn
Why did I write this book? When I was reviewing my work, I realized that I make a lot of references to the sun. I live in the desert, where most of our days are sunny, so that’s no surprise. I get very depressed when gloomy weather lasts too long, which is commonly known as SAD – seasonal affective disorder. It’s more common in women and in northern countries with long, dark winters (like Scandinavia). But the sun is such a central part of my life that it made sense to sit down and write a book of solar haiku. And it made even more sense to write a series of haiku that covered the whole year. It was hard to come up with so many haiku about one subject. I scoured the Internet, looking for any information about the sun that was new to me, and it worked. I produced 369 sun haiku that I hope all of you will enjoy.
I dedicated the book to my brother, Mark, who died of melanoma.
I also have a deep, abiding fascination for the rich history, culture, and spirituality of Ancient Egypt, and that exerted a huge influence.
