Interview: I mostly write Free verse, some haikus, Tanaka’s and Acrostic at times but usually with my own personal stamp, breaking the rules. —Cindy Georgakas

“Love is not love until it’s given away, nurtured and protected, reaching through the pains of despair to the light, rejoicing in these moments where wings give flight to our dreams and aspirations. When we stand firmly rooted in these truths we become guardian angels bridging peace in destruction, no matter what race, color, nationality, or sexual preference, inviting everyone to the table setting aside biases, severing hate” —Cindy Georgakas

—J. Ré Crivello: Do you think poetry is back in fashion?

—Cindy Georgakas: I absolutely do, more than ever which can be seen by so many in our local paper here, poetry competitions in our community, library poetry readings and the vast array of styles and forms we have at our disposal today.  I love the encouragement happening in the classrooms today to explore and express feelings and thoughts in poetry and anything goes. One of my cousins is a teacher and started something called “Culture Jar” which is an activity in class where scholars are turning their culture into a poem in a style of their choice and doing an art project with it!  I just loved hearing the encouragement of poetry in the classroom in grade school. .

I mostly write Free verse, some haikus, Tanaka’s and Acrostic at times but usually with my own personal stamp, breaking the rules. I love spoken word poetry and of course Amanda Gorman and want to play with that more when time permits.

I’m not much of a joiner but I do love to play on the whims of my own mind and creativity where words are born from quiet moments, time in nature or times where the ink comes gushing out onto the page. I also appreciate our friends that do prompts that allow me to drop a line in their comments for a lovely pause in my day when time permits.

Rumi, Kahil Kibran, Robert Frost, Maya De Angelo, Mary Oliver and many more of our Word Press poets are favorites that give me pause and influence my mood and my writing.

J Ré: Is your poetry created daily, or do you wait to be inspired to write it?

—Cindy Georgakas: While I write something every day, beginning in meditative brain dumping and journaling, most often a poem pops up in the midst of this.  My inspiration comes at all times in the day or night depending on what is going on in the world around me.  Let’s say I have enough inspiration with the cast of characters in my life to write several books. Writing poetry is like breathing for me and I’m always elated to write a poem about a loved one and pass it on to them on a special occasion that always is appreciated which gives me so much joy. The problem is, I LOVE sending snail mail and that has now suffered since I write so much and deciphering my chicken scratch is barely legible.

—J. Ré: What is your next publishing project?

Cindy Georgakas: Oh Juan, I have so many ideas about that and to name a few, I have a book on aging that is in the infant stages, a children’s book which I wrote but haven’t revisited, a small book I’ve been wanting to turn into a bigger book with the costs of small books going up and perhaps a novel I started on mental health.  I get lost on what to work on first and then my blog, family, work and real life takes priority so I can’t give any time lines at the moment.  After having written 2 books in 2 years, I’m currently working on the exercise needs of my body that got me in trouble from sitting too much during that time.

—J. Ré: Could you tell us how it came about?

Cindy Georgakas: Each of these books are born out of my love of life, people, change, being an advocate for myself and others to find their light in dark times and to access their/our greatness where that is an empty well of creativity if we stop to listen to it.  This is where I draw my inspiration daily!

—J. Ré: What city do you live in, and can you describe your favorite bar or café?

Cindy Georgakas: I live in Woodside, California, a small community nestled in nature where I can walk on beautiful trails or hit the market by foot or café for my daily needs.  We have a hardware store, a tennis shop, 2 restaurants and a wonderful store for gifts.  I love the community of catching up briefly with neighbors or meeting new dogs and their owners on the trails or streets but you’ll never catch me at the local café.  They changed it several years back and not only don’t I like the food or coffee, it isn’t conducive for writing and accessing my inner thoughts.

My favorite caffe closed years back and was a hidden gem near and dear to my heart where I could hide away and and barely utter a word to anyone. It was called Late for the train next to a train station and could sit for hours scribbling on their paper placemats.  They had hanging spider plants, great scones and a warm friendly atmosphere with a vibe of the 6o’s. I’ve yet to find a replacement and prefer sitting in my office or kitchen table with animals underfoot except when they are demanding my attention. The truth is, it’s a good thing I have them and clients or I might never leave the table. They are good stewards watching out for me and making sure I get up and move.

  12. Avatar de Prior...

I really enjoyed this interview (read it from email yesterday) and wanted to come back and share that it was nice to learn more about Cindy. These interviews can be great for letting us know more about the person behind the content – and my fav takeaway was hearing about the loss of the «Late for the Train» cafe «next to a train station where Cindy could sit for hours scribbling on paper placemats! Ahhhh….. and it reminded me that writers become really good writers from lots and lots of writing – and that cafe sounds like it was a time with much «fecundity» 🙂
