STRANGE FRUIT by Luisa Zambrotta

Strange Fruit  is a song performed by Billie Holiday, who first sang and recorded it in 1939. Written by teacher Abel Meeropol as a poem and published in 1937, it protested against American racism, particularly the lynching of African Americans.

Southern trees bear strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees

Pastoral scene of the gallant south
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop
Here is a strange and bitter crop

Thank you, dear Luisa, for the poem that shows the horror of the inhuman acts some people commit. There is only one race, the human race.

Such a horrible time in our nation’s past. Racism is evil. We are all brothers and sisters. Thanks for this reminder, Luisa!

It’ was a horrible time, dear Priscilla: we can only hope that a more subtle racism, not based solely on skin color, won’t increasingly gain ground.

Brilliant share and timing, Cara Luisa, since Trump wants museums to have information on things like this because it does not mirror his whitewashed version of America. A form of this is happening when masked men without any identification shove immigrants into cars and whisk them away.

Thank you, Luisa, for revisiting the powerful and moving legacy of “Strange Fruit.” A tragic chapter in history that must never be forgotten, and the song’s message resonates as strongly today as it did decades ago.
