«Rubbish Mountain» a Quirky Response Poem by Robbie Cheadle

Published by

She asked if she could stay a while
to finish the last year of her degree
Her life was in a right muddle
with her lover she’d parted ways
She needed a fresh start
thought our back room would do
A great place to sit and study
turn her life right around
Naturally we let her squat there
until her examinations were done
And then she moved right out
leaving behind a rubbish mountain
Textbooks, paper, some balled
some not, pens, some leaking
some not, an old calculator
The pile was like a small island
in the middle of the wooden floor
Who would expect their generosity
to be met with such disrespect

I’m a guest in my daughter and son-in-law’s house right now. Of course I’ll clean up after myself. I’m scratching my head at the kind of people who wouldn’t. Great poem, Robbie!
