not like a grisly gangster
ordering a hit on a bitter rival
or like Greeks finding Kefi
pieces cracked against the wall.
“Opas” ringing in the air
or smashing them in a fit
of uncontrolled rage.

I kill plates accidentally
piling too many in the dish
rack or finding one mysteriously
cracked in the cupboard or
knocked off the counter
by the handle of my wok
or the paw of a brown-striped cat.
