Behind closed doors and punched-in
walls, parents argue, siblings
fight.
Our neighbors party and sometimes
take flight.
The one place that is always perfect.
Temperatures are never too hot.
Temperatures are never too cold.
Old slippers and sneakers kept by the
front door.
You’re familiar with every creak, bump
and sound.
I look around this old, lived-in space
and every memory of family comes
rushing in.
Mommy’s cake plates that were never
Empty.
Daddy’s blues piping loud all night long
from the mancave in the basement.
It’s strange that all the things that made
us dysfunctional
made us family most of all.
