«Look buddy,» she said, «life is short
but apparently not short enough
for us to quit complaining about how
short life is and do something to
be remembered for.»
At the time I didn’t grasp the
depth of her words
I was more focused on playing with her
daughter outside in
the yard
as we were both kids
Besides
she didn’t even address the words to
me but to the husband that
she called good for nothing on a daily
basis
For some reason I never
forgot the words
And I never forgot her husband’s face
as he heard them
I think the poor guy was trying to
become something, taking on
some big project of some kind
and his wife wasn’t sharing his vision
But she was a simple woman. She was happy
as long as he paid for
her cigarettes and
for their daughter’s expenses
I remembered her words now because
I suddenly find myself
the same age as her husband back then
I don’t have a wife and a kid
but I do believe we’ve
something in common still
