- J. Re Crivello: Do you think poetry is back in fashion?
Dawn Pisturino: From what I’ve read, reading poetry became popular again during the COVID lockdowns. People had more time to read, so they discovered a whole new avenue of entertainment. The trend may slack off, as all trends do, but the people dedicated to reading and writing poetry will remain strong.
- J. R. C.: Do you write poetry daily, or do you write as ideas come to you?
Dawn Pisturino: Emotions, a phrase, an event in my life, or a person close to me often trigger me. I was talking to a psychologist who had just been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She said something which blew me away, and that led me to write a poem that was published on Spillwords Press. I couldn’t have imagined this in a million years. It’s these real experiences that drive my poetry.
- • J. R. C.: What is your next publishing project? Could you tell us how it came about?
Dawn Pisturino: My next publishing project is to complete editing and self-publish a middle-grade children’s mystery novel. I once aspired to be a children’s author and took classes in it. The entire book was written for the class, but I didn’t finish editing it. I set it aside and brought it out again this year.
- • J. R. C.: The city you live in, and a description of your favorite bar or café.
Dawn Pisturino: I live in a rural community which is halfway between two small cities. The restaurants are mostly fast food chains. However, a local family opened Filiberto’s, serving authentic Mexican food. Then there’s Bad Miguel’s in Lake Havasu City, home of the London Bridge. That’s where I tried chorizo for the first time.
The Kiss by Dawn Pisturino
I greet the morning with tears in my eyes,
Thinking of you.
Waves of emotion crash over me.
Cymbals clang in my head.
Harpists pluck a different melody,
Dedicated to you.
Ra smiles brighter today.
He knows I found you in my bed last night,
When Hathor drew you to me,
An eager wanderer in the night,
Seeking my warm embrace.
Our bodies melted into one.
But that kiss!
It was one for the gods,
A searing reminder
Our souls are united
On another plane,
Drawn into ecstasy
By mutual desire.
Our lust sated,
You left my bed with an uplifted heart,
Ready to face a new day.
I miss you already,
But my soul follows,
Walking in your shadow.
