«Madder Than a Wet Hen» by Joni Caggiano

“I’ll wear the prettiest dress I have today.  Maybe the boy behind me won’t draw on my ears with his pen.  He hurts my feelings, and I wonder if the ugliness at home follows me around.  Surely, he won’t tease me with my ballerina dress on.”  I realize I am talking to myself again, but I am my own best friend.  I want to pick my nose as it calms me, but I stop.  It is but another dirty thing about me.

As sand spurs stick to my bare feet, releasing their poison, their sting follows me like pain between the ugly words my mom utters.  I sense, without a doubt, that I am to be subjected to a form of torture that crawls behind a mask of love.  This unwanted evil watches like the eyes of a water moccasin on the pond’s edge, waiting for me as I swim.  I tiptoe fearfully down the stairs, and the aluminum chair awaits.  Without a word, she tugs at my waist-length hair to form a ponytail.  The force of the brush is so hard that my tiny head bleeds.

Mom was angry because I had already worn my ballerina dress this week.  She works her fingers between my tender skin and the lace of my favorite dress.  She pulls and tugs until I fall.  Madder than a wet hen, she picks me up again and yanks until the dress rips, as my flesh stings and red drips from bloodless pores.  I am a fledgling torn apart from an unseen enemy in the morning fog.  Standing in a pile of lace and crinoline, I imagine I disappear like a fly swatted on the screen porch on a hot summer day.  In my head, I am in the playground, spinning with skinny arms above my head like a ballerina.

My cotton slip is now wet from sobbing, and a sad sound hangs in the background like a sheet lost to the wind. I see pieces of my dress floating toward each other, flying like painful memories escaping her touch.  Mom can even make my clothing die.

It was a bad day. I saw sorrow in the school playground. A poor girl was playing double-skip the rope when her worn-out panties fell off.    Everyone but me was pointing and laughing, but I ran to her and held her.  I cried, too.  At five, I understood the meaning of the color blue.

Thank you so much Joni for this heartbreaking picture of a child’s inner world, where they cope with the pain of neglect and emotional abuse.

It was my pleasure, Mich. Almost everyone I know has a story. Some seem not so horrible, but we can’t compare our experiences as children to others, as all children deserve a childhood and to be loved. Everyone is different and has a variety of ways to cope. No child should have to worry about abuse or going hungry in a world of billionaires and yet children starve every day, and children, men, and women are abused daily. The only way we can stop it or bring more attention to it, is to write about it. Everyone has a right to be treated respectfully and keep their dignity intact. Also, hopefully everyone wants to seek a better life than they had growing up, if it was tumultuous. So thank you for publishing my story. It is a simple story, but it is one that I experienced and that was a sad day, that I still remember. ❤️

It is, absolutely, AWFUL, to see a young child, working so hard for the parents’, attention, and, still can’t get it, and, the child grows up in, negligence, and, she won’t feel, safe, and, learns to, distrust the, world around her. And, she won’t be able to, find the love she, deserves.

I agree with you. Every child deserves to be loved and be cared for by their parents regardless of the circumstances. Sadly, this isn’t what most children gets.😔

Thank you for your continued support in bringing awareness to your audience as well as Masticadores’ Founder, so thankful for what you both do.

As of June 2024 – «Nearly 400 million children under 5 — or 6 in 10 children within that age group globally — regularly endure psychological aggression or physical punishment at home, according to new UNICEF estimates. Of them, around 330 million are punished by physical means.»

Thank you so much for reading and your kind words. It is so true. It takes a good therapist (or it did for me) to have trust as an adult in other authority figures. Also, reading everything you can. I was very isolated as are many children who are abused. Hope you have a blessed day and thank you again.

«At five, I understood the meaning of the color blue…»

This line is profound and says so much in so few words. This story made me feel so uneasy. I, too, was a kid who could never please my parents or anyone else, no matter how hard I tried. Joni’s writing grabs us and yanks us into the story or poem and we are there, witnessing the events as they unfold, feeling every ounce of pain and fear and despair. Joni’s brilliant. She’s set the bar so high, no one can reach it now. Reading her work is like falling into a dream and being swept away by the currents of her imagination and memories. Wonderful stuff. 😊

Mike, thank you so much for your gracious words. When we write from the perspective of a child I think it hits even harder because in fact, we were children and I was five when this happened to me. I was devastated.

I wish with all my heart that you, nor anyone, had to experience such horror, and yet, I know you did.

Again, thank you for reading my words and knowing how much it means to me. I appreciate you Mike, as I know your abuse was daily, much like mine. I know that we hold each other, embracing each other’s child-like self, and believe it or not, that brings me comfort. The same for every one of you who knows my story and cares. It is like getting a hug. All good stuff for those of us who were abused. YEA!!!

Oh, so sad this makes me want to cry, Joni. I can only imagine the devastation to that little girl as her beautiful dress and dreams are broken. The empathy at the end is also heartbreaking because the world can be very cruel to children, and 5 year olds shouldn’t have to comfort other suffering 5 year olds. (It says something about your kindness too – it’s not only survived, but bloomed).

Oh, Diana, what a compassionate and loving response to this story. I have tried to be a kind person and am empathetic to those I have been blessed to work with in many situations. Thank you for reading and for stating so eloquently why this kind of abuse is so upside down. It affects every part of your life.

Sending the biggest hugs. Hope you are having the most wonderful day in your cabin in the rainforest of Oregon – what a trip! It is one of the prettiest places in the US I have ever visited and done so many times. 🌹
