LANGSTON HUGHES by Luisa Zambrotta

James Mercer Langston Hughes (1902 –1967) was one of the most important writers and thinkers of  the African American artistic movement in the 1920s that celebrated black life and culture. Hughes’s creative genius was influenced by his life in New York City’s Harlem, and his  literary works helped shape American literature and politics. Through his poetry, novels, plays, essays, and children’s books, he promoted equality and  condemned racism and injustice.

I, Too

I, too, sing America.

I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.

Tomorrow,
I’ll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare
Say to me,
“Eat in the kitchen,”
Then.

Besides,
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed—

I, too, am America.

Minstrel Man

Because my mouth
Is wide with laughter
And my throat
Is deep with song,
You do not think
I suffer after
I have held my pain
So long?

Because my mouth
Is wide with laughter,
You do not hear
My inner cry?
Because my feet
Are gay with dancing,
You do not know
I die?

Wisdom speaks for liberty, something we may lose. She is fragile.

Powerful poetry, Luisa. Life was not easy for black Americans during his lifetime, and I can hear the pride and anguish in these poems. Sadly, still a long way to go.
