Even now,
in my springtime of content,
I find myself going back
to when I crossed the Strait of Dover.
How the winter night was cold enough
to keep the other passengers off deck.
How I was out there for a good while,
gazing into a jet void of sky and water.
How the darkness replaced my eyes
with lumps of coal.
And the fizz of the ferry cutting water.
And the sea’s salt scratching my pores.
And my mournful soul out there alone
in the dark, ferried into a foreign land.
