A TRIBUTE TO MEDLIN/WHILHELMINA

Dutch settlers called you Wilhelmina,
Though your skin shone like bronze in the sunlight,
And you wore your feathers with pride.
A sister in the Montauk tribe of Long Island,
Your people named you Medlin,
Foreseeing a bright future.
An Englishman from Kent caught your eye
As he interpreted the new language for the tribe.
Samuel Dayon – a name you grew to love.
You found protection in his arms
When competing tribes and Dutch bogeymen
Attacked and killed your native community.
Your marriage in 1654 yielded strong offspring
Who handed down the family name.
Suffolk County’s rich history began with your ancestors,
Who farmed, fished, and whaled in traditional ways.
But the foreigners brought smallpox to your land,
And no cherished alliance could save you
From the ravages of disease and death.
This tribute I give you, my twelfth great-grandmother,
And mourn your early passing with grief.

How sad, Dawn. I’ve also written some poems about ancestors. It’s a good way to connect with them.
