«Metamorphosis» by  Zewayé

A tender egg was laid the minute I let you
Slip through the doorway of my thoughts.
Your words began to sprout and grow—
Like a seed you carefully brought.

Your lies began to taint my mind,
Corrupting all I used to know.
Unwittingly, I fed that plant,
Believing love was what you sowed.

I bought into your lies; ignored the signs,
Instead of reading between the lines.
I couldn’t see through those cunning eyes—
That your love was nothing but a vice.

Your lies kept growing steadily until
They germinated; they bent my will.
They blossomed into a caterpillar.
They fed on my trust, becoming bigger.

They fed on the trust I gave too thoughtlessly.
You chewed through all I thought was true,
And I believed you loved me too.

You hid your true intentions — a careful disguise;
A cocoon made of alibis;
A seedling drinking from my cries,
While dishonesty smothered all of my tries.

You shut me out, and I took blame,
Believing I had sparked the flame.
Unaware inside that shell,
Your lies were changing, feeding well.

Now you’re a butterfly, a full-grown plant,
But never will you admit
That it’s me you have to thank.
